Buying A Bullldog? How To Find A Reputable Breeder

by Neil Turner

If you're thinking of getting a bulldog, you may feel unsure where you should get one. With so many sellers and breeders offering bulldog puppies for sale, how can you buy from a reputable place? You want to support a breeder that cares for the dogs and has ethical breeding practices. Here is a guide on finding a reputable breeder:

Contact a local club

Bulldogs are a very popular dog breed, and there are many clubs around the country with bulldog enthusiasts. Look for the closest bulldog club to you and get in touch with club members. Club members will refer you to ethical and specialized breeders. For example, if you're interested in English bulldogs for sale, members know which breeders sell the healthiest puppies from good environments.

Do your research

Look at reviews for potential sellers, especially if you're looking at bulldogs for sale online. If you're buying online, you may not be able to visit the breeder in person. Thorough research is also important to avoid wasting time with a breeder who may not be the right fit. Read as many reviews as you can. Then, once you've narrowed down some sellers based on reviews, do extensive research on their website. Look for the following red flags:

  • High volume of sales or large number of puppies for sale
  • Suggests bulldog puppies make great gifts
  • Doesn't provide the name of their vet or medical information
  • Only sells online
  • Doesn't ask buyer to fill out information form

Check for registration

Reputable breeders have current registration for their puppies. The registration indicates that the breed of the bulldog has been verified. Note, however, that registration doesn't mean that the breeder has been inspected or that the puppies are healthy. Always call the organization in which the breeder is registered to be sure it's up to date and there have been no suspensions.

Visit the breeder in person

Once you've chosen your breeder, visit them in person if you are able to inspect the conditions in which the puppies are living. Here are some guidelines on what to look for:

  • Bad smells
  • Small crates and holding areas
  • Visible feces or urine in areas where puppies are held
  • Areas aren't climate controlled
  • Empty food and water bowls
  • Parents of the puppies are absent

Inspect your puppy

A good breeder has healthy, vibrant puppies. The best way to ensure you're buying from a reputable seller is to inspect your puppy before buying if you're not buying online. Here are some signs of an unhealthy puppy:

  • Dirty, unbrushed, or untrimmed coats, especially if there are bald spots
  • Sores
  • Cloudy or watery eyes
  • Itching
  • Shy or aggressive behavior
  • Too fat or skinny
  • Seems tired, not playful

These are ways you can choose a reputable breeder when looking for bulldog puppies for sale. By choosing a good breeder, your puppy will remain a happy and healthy part of your family for many years.
